West Midlands residents outraged as Tesco Express that is 'cornerstone of community' to close down

A petition has been launched to save a “beloved” Tesco Express store in Dudley from closing down.

A petition has been launched to help save and “keep alive” a Tesco Express store in Halesowen that is set to close down in July.

Sean McGuinness, who owns Haden Hill Carpentry & Maintenance firm, based in Halesowen, has created the petition to save the store which he says is the “cornerstone of our community”.

Mr McGuinness said that the Tesco Express in Halesowen is “not just a shop” and is calling on locals to “rally together” to help save it from being closed down.

He said: “It’s time to show our support and make our voices heard. Tesco Express in Halesowen is not just a shop; it's a cornerstone of our community.

“For many of us, it’s the convenient spot we rely on for our daily needs – from grabbing a quick loaf of bread after work, to picking up essentials for elderly relatives.

“It's more than just a store; it's a friendly, welcoming place where the staff greet you by name and the atmosphere feels like home.”

Mr McGuinness said the closure would have “far-reaching consequences” on the local community “especially for residents who may not have the means or the mobility to travel further afield to other supermarkets.”

He added: “It would mean losing the personal touch and the friendly faces that we've come to expect and love. This store supports our community by providing jobs for local residents and being a safe, reliable place for students and parents alike.

“Losing this store would mean losing a huge part of our community’s fabric.”

A Tesco spokesperson confirmed to the Express & Star that its Express store on Dudley Road will close in July.

The spokesperson said: “We have taken the difficult decision to close our Dudley Road Express store later this year. The store will continue to trade as normal until then, and we will continue to serve the local area through a number of other nearby stores.”

In his petition, Mr McGuinness urges Tesco management to “reconsider their decision and explore alternative measures to keep this vital store open such as renovating the site, introducing more local produce, or offering community events could increase store traffic and engagement.”

Elaina Cohen, a Cradley Heath resident, also told the Express & Star that she is “disappointed” by Tesco’s decision as there is not another store close-by and an explanation should be given on why the Halesowen store is closing down.

Ms Cohen said: “I am very disappointed with Tesco’s decision to close the Haden Hill Express. It serves the local community and there is no nearby Tesco.

“The reason they have given is just simply not good enough. I think there should be more consultation with the community and see if an alternative nearby can be offered, if there is a problem we don’t know about. Tesco is removing a well used community facility whilst claiming to put customers first.”

Councillors Daniel Bevan and Simon Phipps for Belle Vale ward said: "We support residents in their campaign to keep the shop open. It's not just important for the residents living nearby, but it also employs local people.

“We would be surprised if the shop wasn't profitable given how well it is used, so it would be a great shame to see it close. If Tesco can't be persuaded to keep the shop open, we will work to attract a new operator so the location can continue serving local people."

Councillor Angela Blythe added: “I understand the role that this Tesco plays in the community. It is one of Belle Vale's vital assets. I use it, and it is always busy.

“It would have a significant impact on the local community if it were to close. I am in full agreement with the residents on the matter.”

MP for Halesowen, Alex Ballinger, said he is “concerned” about the planned closure of the Tesco Express “which has been an important part of our community.”

He told the Express & Star: “My immediate thoughts are with the staff at the store and the uncertainty this decision brings for them and their families. I am also concerned about the impact that this decision has on residents who rely on the store.

“I will be seeking an urgent meeting with Tesco to better understand their decision and to discuss what can be done to support both employees and local residents.”
