Plans for 61 new homes in Stafford among this week’s applications
Plans to build more than 60 new homes on a Stafford field have sparked concerns about flooding and strain on local infrastructure.
Hollins Strategic Land is proposing up to 61 homes on the land south of Radford Bank and a planning application has been submitted to Stafford Borough Council.
A design and access statement put forward as part of the application said: “The proposal demonstrates that the site forms a logical and deliverable extension to Stafford. The site covers an area of 4.47Ha (11.05 acres)and has been promoted for a green infrastructure-led residential development.
“It is located in a sustainable and accessible location on the edge of the Weeping Cross and Wildwood area of Stafford. The design respects the site’s edge-of-Stafford location, maintaining a clear and sensitive transition to surrounding landscapes and safeguarding the setting of nearby heritage assets.
“Pedestrian and cycle routes are prioritised, providing safe and attractive links to Ripon Drive, Chepstow Drive, and Radford Bank. These routes are embedded within green corridors that connect to the wider movement network.

“Over half the site is dedicated to multifunctional green infrastructure and open space, including an attenuation basin, swales, natural play, and robust structural planting.”
The application has already met with several objections from Stafford Borough residents however. A Great Haywood resident said: “This is a flood plain and a stupid idea to allow building on such a space.
“There will be no benefit whatsoever to the local area. If anything it will have the opposite effect as where will the water go?
“Traffic along this stretch is already stupidly busy. We don’t need more.”
An Allium Road resident said: “Between the St Modwen estate, the new one being built behind B&Q, the one that was built on the old police HQ, you are squeezing too many houses on one area; 61 more homes can result on average 122 more vehicles, 244 more individuals needing GP appointments that are already unavailable for the current residents of the area, on average 122 more children to school, not to mentioned the congestion in this area already.
“I work within Stafford community driving between houses and care homes and I see less people now than ever due to the Staffordshire roads. More houses at this end of town is going to make it worse.
“The amount of new build estates in Stafford alone is a joke. Leave some rural landscape to make it somewhere you want to live.”
