Fire crews respond to reports of fire in tall Birmingham building

Fire crews from across Birmingham have been called out to a fire in a tall building in the city centre.

The fire has broken out in a high-rise building on Constitution Hill in Hockley.

West Midlands Fire Service said it had sent eight crews, with more than 30 firefighters to the scene, after receiving a call at around 7.45am.

A spokesman for West Midlands Fire Service said: “Shortly before 7.30am on Friday, we responded to Constitution Hill in the Hockley area of Birmingham.

"Currently, there are ten fire engines, two 4×4 brigade response vehicles and a hydraulic aerial platform at the scene. The first crew reached the incident within four minutes of being mobilised.

"This is a severe fire on the fourth floor of a five-storey building. Firefighters wearing breathing apparatus are tackling the fire.

"Due to our presence in the area, there is considerable disruption. 

"Constitution Hill and Summer Lane are closed, so please avoid the area and find alternative travel routes."

A spokesman for West Midlands Police said: "We were called by West Midlands Fire Service to Constitution Hill in Birmingham city centre just before 7.45am today. 

"One person was taken to hospital suffering from the effects of smoke, and the cause of the fire is being investigated."
