The vacant blocks dominate the skyline of Druids Heath, which is set to be transformed in the coming years after the Labour-run council’s controversial regeneration plans were recently approved.

Residents began to be moved out of the blocks a number of years ago but the demolition of the buildings themselves has been delayed.

Green Party councillor Julien Pritchard, who represents the area, has claimed the empty blocks are still attracting vandalism, fly-tipping and graffiti.

“In some cases, residents were moved out of those tower blocks years ago and they have not been demolished,” he said.

“I have lost count of the amount of timescales given for when they will come down. It’s just not good enough.”

Coun Pritchard also said residents fear that the city council is neglecting the Druids Heath estate because it’s being redeveloped soon.

“The tower blocks not being demolished is an example of that,” he said.

“So is fly-tipping not being cleared, alleyways not being cleared and the fact people are fighting for basic repairs in their homes.

“Residents are dealing with mouldy, leaky flats constantly. There’s a definitely a feeling from residents that Druids Heath is more forgotten than usual.”

A spokesperson for the city council said this week that the demolition of the tower blocks is due to commence early in the New Year.

“Part of the reason for the delay is the re-routing of a main gas pipe that runs along the side of the blocks,” they continued.

“We acknowledge that this has taken longer than expected.”

On claims of the area being neglected, the council spokesperson said: “Additional investment is being provided to Druids Heath as a result of the regeneration through the council’s Meanwhile Offer.

“There is currently increased investment in the area to provide CCTV, additional street cleaning provision, additional housing officers, and a dedicated provision for repairs and maintenance for council homes.”
