Plans lodged to convert Tamworth hotel into 10 self-contained apartments
Plans have been lodged to convert a hotel into 10 apartments for adults with severe learning difficulties and brain injuries. The 18th century grade II listed Brewery House in Tamworth is situated opposite the castle and was previously used as a hotel annex.
A planning application has been submitted to Tamworth Borough Council to change the building from a hotel to 10 self contained apartments. Additionally there are also plans for a single storey side extension and internal alterations.
Brewery House was built in 1750 was constructed as a workhouse, used as an annex to provide accommodation at The Castle Hotel, and more recently used as social housing. According to a heritage statement submitted by the applicant there would be no impact on the significance of heritage asset.
The building currently provides 19 ensuite rooms over two floors. In 2023 planning permission was granted for 24 1-bedroom apartments. Brewery House is a traditional red brick property totalling 686 square metres.
The design and access statement reads: “The proposed development involves converting the existing hotel annex into ten apartments. Each apartment will be self-contained and intended for individuals with significant learning challenges and acquired brain injuries. The change of use is designed to address specific local needs for accessible housing within the community.
“The existing building will be reused to create 10 individual homes with rooms at ground floor, and first floor with various removals of walls.
“Тo the north side of the frontage is a new 3m wide opening formed in existing masonry wall, with new masonry piers and a new 4m wide dropped kerb. This allows access to 4 car parking spaces, bin stores and cycle racks. A pedestrian path is shown linking to the existing entrance ramp across the paved area. The remainder of the lawn is retained as amenity space with new shrub planting proposed around the edge.
“Changing the use from hotel to residential apartments meets local needs and aligns with policy objectives to improve the social and economic fabric of the town.”
The application and all supporting documents can be viewed on Tamworth Borough Council’s planning portal under reference number 0197/2025. Public comments on the application can be made until 10 October. The application is currently under consideration by planning officers.
