New Lidl proposed for Cannock among this week’s planning applications in Staffordshire
A new Lidl food store could open in Cannock as part of a proposed new commercial development.
A planning application has been submitted to Cannock Chase Council to redevelop land at the former ATOS Origin site in Walsall Road.
The proposals include an office building and 20 units for industrial, storage or distribution use. A planning statement submitted as part of the application said: “The eastern extent of the site comprises a tarmac-surfaced car parking area, which is being temporarily used for the storage of commercial vehicles
“The western area of the site was formerly in use as offices, with the office building associated with the former ATOS Origin occupants, demolished in 2011. The west of the site now comprises an access road and vacant, derelict land with concrete slabs associated with the site’s former use, with an existing access point directly onto Walsall Road.
“A food retail store of 1,962 sqm GIA floorspace is proposed to the south west of the site. The end-user of the proposed food retail building is confirmed, and they will be Lidl GB Ltd.

“The proposed food retail element is the enabling development for the overall development proposed, allowing the rest of the site to come forward for development with regard to the viability of redeveloping this brownfield site. A total of 116 car parking spaces are proposed across the car parking area to be used in association with the food retail store.
“The development’s high-quality design and use of materials will greatly improve the character and appearance of the site and neighbouring public realm.”
