Plans submitted for Lidl and homes on site of old Wolverhampton sausage factory
A plan to build a supermarket and homes on the site of an old abattoir has been formally submitted.
The new Lidl supermarket and up to 17 new homes would be built on the site of the former Gills sausage factory and abattoir on the edge of Wolverhampton according to the application now submitted to planners at City of Wolverhampton Council.
The former meat wholesaler’s factory, on the edge of Birmingham New Road and Parkfield Road, would be demolished to make way for the supermarket and a 110-space car park.
Plans for a mix of up to 17 one-to-four-bed homes are also included in the planning application submitted by supermarket chain Lidl.
The supermarket would also bring 40 new jobs, according to the plans.
The site was previously occupied by FA Gills as an abattoir and sausage factory but the business was sold in 2023 and operations ceased.
The buildings are now empty.

A statement included with the application said: “The application site extends to 1.28 hectares, with the full element of the development comprising a single storey building with a total floorspace of 2,185 square metres with a net sales floor area of 1,516 square metres.
110 car parking spaces are to be provided including six accessible spaces, nine parent and child spaces and two electric vehicle charging points, together with 12 cycle spaces.
An amended vehicular access is proposed from Parkfield Road which will serve both customers and delivery vehicles.
“The development will bring a vacant parcel of brownfield land into active use, remediate the site, provide local job opportunities, affordable housing and bring inward investment to the area.
“The new foodstore will provide a fit for purpose facility for Lidl with a contemporary, well-designed approach which is environmentally sound.
“The provision of up to 17 dwellings will provide affordable and family housing in a residential area and sustainable location.”
