City of Wolverhampton Council has backed plans to build 32 new flats on the site of the former Duke of York pub in Heath Town, Wolverhampton.

Housing developer Keon Homes plans to build the new flats on the corner of Wednesfield Road and Inkerman Street where the pub once stood.

Work is expected to start by the end of the year.

The now approved planning application for the former Duke of York is the latest part of a £120m regeneration plan for the Wolverhampton estate and follows new council housing recently being built on the estate for the first time in more than 50 years.

City of Wolverhampton Council said the plans for the one and two-bed flats form the second phase of its regeneration work in Heath Town – which includes 120 new homes.

Jim Woodsford, planning manager at Keon Homes, said: “We are delighted that planning has been approved to take redundant land and transform it into 32 one and two-bed apartments as part of the Heath Town regeneration.

“This is a real gateway site into Wolverhampton city centre, and we will reflect this with enhanced landscaping and a shared garden space for placemaking and balconies to encourage community interaction.

Councillor Steve Evans, cabinet member for city housing at City of Wolverhampton Council, said: “One of our key priorities is to increase the number of good homes in well connected neighbourhoods across the city.

“The regeneration of Heath Town is helping achieve that and it is heartening to see how it is changing the lives of families for the better.

“This planning application is part of the next phase of our transformation of the estate, which is being built on the strong sense of community at Heath Town, where we have delivered improvements and new homes the residents can be proud of.”

The site off Wednesfield Road was home to the Duke of York until 2010 when the pub was demolished.

The first phase of the work in Heath Town saw 40 new council homes built in Hobgate Road and Chervil Rise.

Several old and empty buildings were demolished in Heath Town as part of the £120m work and a number of existing residential blocks have also been refurbished in recent years.
