Mr Miliband was taken on a tour of the factory in Mustang Drive, the UK's only large-scale manufacturer of high-voltage grid equipment, which is essential for offshore wind and clean power networks.

The company employs about 1,400 people across its Stafford sites, but has plans to create 400 new jobs as part of its expansion over the coming years.

Mr Miliband met with workers and apprentices at the invitation of Stafford MP Leigh Ingham, who used the visit to highlight the importance of the government spending in communities such as Stafford to create skilled jobs.

Miss Ingham said: “GE Vernova is essential to the UK’s clean energy mission and to our national energy security.

“It’s a brilliant local employer set to create 400 new jobs in the next four years. This is absolutely something we should be celebrating and investing in. Companies like this mean people growing up in Stafford can access well paid, skilled jobs, without having to move away from home.

”“Backing clean energy must also mean backing British manufacturing and the people here in Stafford who make it happen."
