Staffordshire MP sponsors new laws to bring empty shops back into use
A West Midland MP has called for a new law that would allow charities, community groups and small businesses to take over empty high-street shops.
Leigh Ingham, MP for Stafford, has sponsored Luke Akehurst's Vacant Commercial Properties (Temporary Use) Bill, which has passed its first reading in the House of Commons.

The bill, if it became law, would give local authorities new powers to compel landlords to let empty shop units for temporary use
Miss Ingham said the new law would help rejuvenate high streets, not just in Stafford, but across the country.
“Stafford high street is no stranger to empty shops, many of them owned by absentee landlords with no connection to our community," she said.
"Where properties are standing empty for long periods, local councils should be able to step in and help charities, community groups, and small businesses use that space to serve the community.
“By unlocking vacant properties, the bill would boost our local economy, create jobs, and provide vital space for charities and community organisations. It would help transform empty units from symbols of decline into thriving enterprises, bringing life back to our town centres."
She said it would restore pride in communities and support small businesses."
The bill will now proceed to its second reading.
