'Scale of arrests unnecessary and unsustainable': Stourbridge MP criticises Palestine Action arrests

A West Midland MP has criticised the police response after almost 900 supporters of the banned Palestine Action group were arrested over the weekend.

Cat Eccles, MP for Stourbridge, said that she supported the ban on Palestine Action, which has been declared to be a terrorist group after it broke into the RAF Brize Norton airbase, and vandalised a plane.

But she said the events on Saturday, when 890 supporters of the group were arrested during a protest outside Parliament, was excessive and disproportionate.

She spoke out after Walthamstow MP Stella Creasy spoke out, suggesting that the Government was undermining the meaning of the term terrorism by applying it too liberally.

Miss Eccles thanked Miss Creasy for raising an important matter in Parliament.

"Over the weekend nearly 900 people were arrested following protests outside Parliament for Palestine," she said.
