Walsall MP Eddie Hughes on the Conservative Party Conference: Boris is just Boris...but Jo is one for the future

Believe it or not, Boris Johnson is not the major talking point you might expect him to be at this year’s conference – at least among the people I have spoken to.

The view here is people know what Boris is like. They expect him to behave in a certain way and he rarely disappoints.

Plenty of what he is saying reflects the view of the party, just with Boris’s own little twist on it.

I did manage to see his brother Jo Johnson speaking at a fringe event, and I have to say I was very impressed.

While Boris is all about personality, Joe trades on ability. He comes across as serious and ridiculously able – definitely one for the future in my opinion.

I have to say I missed the event that became the day’s major talking point.

Jacob Rees-Mogg appeared to have his hands full when dealing with protesters at a Bruges Group event at Manchester Town Hall.

But it sounds like he was his usual cool, calm and collected self and dealt with the intrusion very well.

The fact so many people were there gives an indication of the level of stardom that Jacob has at the moment.

My day started with a Brexit business breakfast with Liz Truss and various financial representatives from the City of London.

Some of them seemed to be suggesting that the transition period should be almost open-ended, which is a big concern for me. I believe if it is left open-ended it may never happen.

It should be no longer that two years - and I’m sure that if we challenge our talented people to get it done in that time they will.

Finally I must sing the praises of West Midlands Mayor Andy Street, who has been up here singing the region’s praises.

The Midlands Engine event he chaired was so packed that had to watch it from outside the room.

There is a lot of enthusiasm for the West Midlands up here, and Andy Street is the man who is really pushing us forward.
