City Tories open for debate over flag row
A Tory councillor has challenged Eleanor Smith to a debate over the Black Country flag.
Councillor Udey Singh says he wants a 'frank and open discussion' with the Wolverhampton South West MP, who says she has concerns about chains being used in the flag because of their links to the slave trade.
Mr Singh, who represents Tettenhall Regis on Wolverhampton council, said: "This flag was designed by a 12-year-old girl who I'm sure has precious little idea of what racism is.
"Divisive comments about the flag do the region no favours at all.
"It is particularly sad to see that the MP has apparently backtracked, even after Momentum had backed her comments.
"I would be more that happy to meet Ms Smith for a frank and open discussion on the flag, and explain to her why I believe it is a great thing for the Black Country."
