Shoppers in the Wulfrun Centre were invited to leave a memorial message which was displayed in exchange for a  £5 donation per listing which included the person's name and words and which was then put on the tree and in a cabinet nearby.

Their messages were included in the Express & Star in the run up to Christmas, with the City of Wolverhampton Rotary Club announcing that more than £6,700 had been raised from the campaign.

A spokeswoman for the Rotary club said: "Through the generous donations from members of the public and our sponsors, we have raised £6,748 and this amount will grow with Gift Aid payments.

This year the beneficiaries of the money raised will be Sponsored Breaks, a local Community Interest Company (CIC) which recognises people who are most deserving of a free camper van holiday; Wolverhampton MS Therapy & Oxygen Centre which offers therapies for people with long term medical conditions; Compton Care Hospice trust and Rotary Club of Wolverhampton Charitable Trust which funds a range of causes at home and abroad.
