David Beckham faces trial over speeding charge
Former England captain is accused of driving at 59mph in a 40mph zone but denies charge
Former England footballer and captain David Beckham is to go on trial over an alleged speeding offence.
He is accused of driving his £160,000 Bentley Bentayga at 59mph in a 40mph zone of the A40 in Paddington, west London. The 43-year old, of Holland Park, was allegedly caught on a speed camera at 5.37pm on January 23 this year.
Under sentencing guidelines, the speed constitutes a ‘Band B’ offence – and could see Beckham hit with a ban of up to 28 days, up to six penalty points, plus a fine of up to 100 per cent of his weekly income.
He entered a ‘not guilty’ plea on August 17 and the case started today at Lavender Hill Magistrates’ Court in Battersea, south-west London. However, the hearing was purely administrative, with just a magistrate and legal adviser present.
A full case-management hearing with Beckham in court is set for September 4 before Wimbledon magistrates.
Beckham made his name at Manchester United before going on to play for Real Madrid, LA Galaxy, AC Milan and Paris Saint-Germain. He retired from professional football in 2013.
