Meanwhile, even more exclusive ‘super-luxury’ models from the likes of Ferrari and McLaren also saw impressive gains, with UK registrations up 16 per cent from 24,500 in 2015 to 28,500 according to figures from automotive research organisation Jato.

The news comes shortly after supercar dealership Romans International, based in Surrey, was named one of the fastest-growing businesses in Europe. Company director Tom Jaconelli said: “Trade in supercars has been phenomenal in the last few years and demand is continuing to outstrip supply.

“We’ve been trading for over 20 years and have never known business to be so strong – even when the economy has been at its best.”

Research into 2016 registration data by private number plate retailer click4reg.co.uk also revealed that Tesla had a successful 2016, with registrations up 75 per cent on the previous year. The company saw 1,394 units registered in 2015 and 2,445 in 2016.

The research by click4reg.co.uk also looked at the most popular colours for luxury cars. Black was number one, followed by silver and grey. However, performance cars tended to be specified in more eye-catching paint jobs, with orange the most popular colour for McLarens and red for Ferraris.
