Criteria for the research meant cars had to fall into the Supermini category of vehicles, have a five-star Euro NCAP rating, produce CO2 emissions of 120g/km or less. They would also need be available on the second-hand market for a maximum of £5,000 as well as having a low insurance group rating score.

The study also revealed that 31 percent in a one thousand sample of 17-24-year-old drivers did not consider safety when buying a car.

James Hilton, director of products at Co-op insurance, said: “The research gives us real insight into what young people are looking for when it comes to choosing their first car and it’s concerning to find that so few prioritise safety.

A wider study into the safest used cars on sale was also conducted, with the Volvo V40 equipped with the safety pack coming out on top. The criteria for this research was identical to that of first used cars, with the exception of a maximum price of £15,000.
