Major half marathon is coming to Wolverhampton - and it could become an annual event

Compton Care is organising a major new running event for the West Midlands

A brand new half marathon is being planned for Wolverhampton.

Compton Care is planning the event in September, in direct competition to the existing Wolverhampton Half Marathon.

The Compton Half Marathon will be held on Sunday September 27.

That is just three weeks after the Wolverhampton Half Marathon is held in the city centre.

The Compton event is off road and flat, meaning it offers the prospect of fast times in a picturesque setting both in the city and across the border into South Staffordshire.

It will start and end at Aldersley Stadium and take runners on smooth paths along the Smestow Valley from Wolverhampton to Wombourne and back.

It is hoped the event will become an annual fixture, with the possibility of extending the number of distances on offer in future to make it a big family day out.

Up to 700 people are expected to take part in the inaugural event, which is set to raise tens of thousands of pounds for the hospice, which provides specialist care both at its Wolverhampton centre and in the community in the Black Country, Staffordshire and parts of Shropshire.

Emily Thompson, Community & Events Manager at Compton Care, said:: “This is set in the heart of Wolverhampton. It is an exciting new event that will bring together runners of all levels for an unforgettable race-day experience.

“Whether people are pushing for a personal best, tackling their first half marathon, or running with friends for the joy of it, we are hoping to deliver the perfect balance of challenge, scenery, and support.

“The carefully designed course takes runners beyond Aldersley Stadium and the city and through South Staffordshire’s Smestow Valley. It will blend fast, runnable routes with green spaces and local character.”

Entry for the race is £35, which is £7 cheaper than the city centre Wolverhampton Half Marathon, and those entering the race are also being asked to consider raising sponsorship for Compton Care. There are also £30 early bird deals available with a code accessed through Compton Care’s website.
