The child's mother was also in the Hyundai i20 when it was involved in a collision with a stationary Peugeot ending up on its roof at Oxford Gardens in Stafford just after midnight yesterday - Friday.

An off-duty paramedic was first on scene and all three were fortunate to avoid serious injury.

Staffordshire Police confirmed the male driver was three and half times over the legal drink drive limit.

The man and the child were taken to Royal Stoke University Hospital with minor injuries while the female casualty was picked up by a relative.

A police spokesman stated officers were awaiting the man's blood tests results but at this stage no arrests had been made.

The owner of the Peugeot was not in the car at the time and only discovered the damage to his vehicle at 9.50am later yesterday morning.

He said: "We were alerted at 12.23am when the ambulance service rang the police. An off-duty paramedic came across it.

"All occupants were out of the vehicle which was on its roof.

"The male driver gave a positive breath test.

"He was taken to hospital with high blood pressure.

"We are still awaiting the blood tests. No arrests have been made at this stage.

"A woman and a child were also in the car.

"The child was taken to hospital while someone came to collect the mother.

"The owner of the Peugeot was oblivious to what had happened and reported it to us at 9.50am after seeing the damage to his car."

A West Midlands Ambulance Service spokeswoman added: "We were called at 12.20am to a RTC (Road Traffic Collision) by an off-duty paramedic who was first on scene.

"One ambulance attended.

"One adult and one child had relatively minor injuries and were taken to Royal Stoke."

Stafford Police posted a picture to their 3,000 Twitter followers of the car on its roof with the message: "In Stafford tonight how not to park your car. Driver blew more than 3 times over the limit. #luckynoinjury"
