A jury of five men and seven women retired at Gloucester Crown Court at 4.35pm yesterday (Monday) to consider their verdict after a trial which started last week.

The prosecution and defence concluded their speeches yesterday morning and His Honour Judge Michael Cullum summed the case up in the afternoon, before sending the jury out to begin their deliberations.

Malkit Chaukria, 31, allegedly fell asleep at the wheel of his van, veered off the motorway and crashed into the back of a 44-ton truck which had pulled onto the hard shoulder with a puncture.

Chaukria of Hill Top, has pleaded not guilty to causing the death of 29-year-old Aaron Ryan by dangerous driving.

He also denies an alternative charge of causing death by careless driving.
