The multi-million pound transformation of the city centre station has been accompanied by work on the new Grand Central retail development above the tracks and platforms.

The shopping complex, anchored by a £35 million John Lewis store, will open on September 24.

Other tenants will include Foyles, The White Company, Hobbs, Joules, Kiehls, Cath Kidston and Mica Beauty.

Martin Frobisher, route managing director for Network Rail, said: "The opening of the improved Birmingham New Street will be a huge boost to the city. It's another iconic building that the people of Birmingham can be proud of and will provide a vastly improved travelling experience for passengers.

"The new station provides natural light on to the amazing new concourse, improved platform access, stunning architecture and better access to all parts of the city centre."
