To cope with the demand the coaches will increase the number of training evenings from three to five from today.

A total of 43 people including women and children turned up on Bank Holiday Monday for its first full night in operation at the Ashmore Lake Road base.

Amateur boxers Shaun Hargreaves and Neil Buckland joined forces to set up to set up Willenhall Boxing Club which is open to all ages and abilities from 10 to18 years old.

Mr Hargreaves said: "The first training evening was on Monday night and 43 people came in across the age ranges and both male and female. We were so busy that due to the high demand we are going to opening five nights.

"We had intended to run sessions on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays and see how things went for the first few weeks, but because of demand we will be open on Tuesday and Thursdays evenings as well.

"We're splitting up the age groups just to create more space and make it a bit more comfortable for everybody who wants to come along. There is also big demand for ladies non contact sessions. We will run these on Tuesdays at 7pm immediately after the kids sessions that are run from 6pm to 7pm."

The charge is £2 per session and this goes towards the gym's running costs.

"We're hoping to attract some funding in future so that we can offer discounts.

"We would like to thank everybody for their support and for the sponsorships. We are now in need of volunteer coaches for the club," he added.

Direct Carpets and JJX Logistics, both based in the town, have helped to sponsor the new project.

The outfit is also attracting a following on social media network Facebook taking its 'likes' up 70 to 669 since the official launch last weekend.
