'If it hadn't been for my neighours we could have been trapped': Residents relieved but uneasy after fire wrecks flat in Wolverhampton tower block
Residents of a Wolverhampton tower block where a fire broke out in a first-floor flat spoke of the terrifying moments after it started, and their relief the consequences weren't more severe.
Residents living in Wobaston Court in Fordhouses were left scrambling to get outside after the fire was reported at around 8.38am yesterday (February 23) with eyewitnesses reporting seeing flames and smoke coming from the flat's window.
West Midlands Fire Service crews attended and were able to extinguish the blaze, which the fire service said had started on the balcony and then spread to the flat.
The flat was left blackened by smoke and fire damage, with the window having been smashed open, and a lingering smell of smoke in the air around the flat complex.
Residents living in Wobaston Court had been able to return to their flats after the fire service left the scene, but several said they felt uneasy and shocked about what had happened, and worried about what could happen if another fire broke out.
One resident who asked not to be named said she and her son had heard shouting and had been alarmed to see smoke.

She said: "All I heard this morning was everyone shouting for us to get out as our block was on fire, which was a surprise as I didn't hear one fire alarm, apart from the lift alarm.
