2,500 Wolverhampton households cancel garden-waste collections after council increases fees by 37.5 per cent
About 2,500 householders in Wolverhampton have stopped using the council's garden-waste collection service since the charges were increased by 37.5 per cent at the start of the year.
Councillor Councillor Bhupinder Gakhal, cabinet member responsible for waste services, revealed the figure in response to a question from Councillor Celia Hibbert during a meeting of Wolverhampton Council.

At the start of this year, the council raised the cost of its garden waste 'purple bin' collection from £40 a year to £55, sparking a petition from the opposition Conservative group.

But Councillor Gakhal added that 21,471 people had chosen to renew their subscriptions, and would continue to receive the service.
