Busy gateway to Wolverhampton city centre reopens Friday - 10 months after it closed as part of £19 million scheme

A busy gateway route into Wolverhampton city centre will finally reopen on Friday - 10 months after it closed for improvement works.

Darlington Street, between School Street and Chapel Ash island, has been closed to traffic since January 20 as part of a £19 million paving scheme which to create a pedestrian-friendly walkway through the city centre.

But Councillor Chris Burden, cabinet member for city development, said the stretch will reopen to all traffic on November 21ahead of the busy Christmas period.

The news will come as a relief to businesses in Darlington Street, who said their trade had been devastated by the work.

Michael Rocco, who owns Rocco's Italian restaurant, says trade had plummeted by 75 per cent since the work had begun, leaving him £25,000 out of pocket. 

The work was originally due to have been completed in July, but problems with a damaged water main led to significant delays.
