The city has officially been recognised as one of the UK's Kindest Cities by Benefact Group, an organisation that gives all its available profits to good causes, after locals made a large number of nominations for charities close to their hearts.

Benefact Group said that between January and August 2025, residents in Wolverhampton had submitted 11,961 nominations for charities close to their hearts, more than almost any other city in the UK, with only Newcastle providing more votes.

These nomination were for everything from grassroots projects to national charities and residents were able to nominate the causes they care about most.

The city came third in the top 10 list, behind only Milton Keynes and Norwich, with Benefact Group ranking the top 10 by comparing the number of charity nominations from each city with its population size, using the latest data from the Office for National Statistics.

The number of votes for each city or town in the top 10 was as follows:

  1. Norwich: 11,938 nominations

  2. Milton Keynes: 10,799 nominations

  3. Wolverhampton: 11,961 nominations

  4. Newcastle: 13,000 nominations

  5. Swindon: 8,269 nominations

  6. Luton: 6,369 nominations

  7. Plymouth: 7,463 nominations

  8. Cardiff: 9,343 nominations

  9. Birkenhead: 2,205 nominations

  10. Manchester: 9,828 nominations

The title comes from The Movement for Good Awards, an annual programme run by the Benefact Group, which invites the public to nominate charities for funding.

Since launching in 2019, the initiative has generated more than 4.6 million nominations from the general public and over the last decade, the Benefact Group has given more than £250 million to more than 10,000 charities and Community Interest Companies across the UK and Ireland.

Chris Pitt, group impact director of Benefact Group, said: “Since launching the Movement for Good Awards in 2019, our mission has been to help charities thrive by supporting the causes people care about most.

"Every nomination reflects someone’s compassion, and thanks to the public’s incredible response, the awards have become a nationwide force for good across the UK and Ireland.

“It’s incredibly moving to see communities come together, and we’re especially thankful to the people of Wolverhampton for their generosity in taking the time to nominate.

"Every nomination we receive is more than just a number: it’s a potential lifeline for a charity, helping them carry on with the vital work they do.”
