Wolverhampton Half-Marathon and 10k: Route and road closures as hundreds of runners set to descend on city
Wolverhampton's annual half-marathon is set to again see hundreds of runners of all levels take in the sights and sounds of the city centre and the surrounds.
The Wolverhampton Half-Marathon and 10k will bring together elite level runners, club runners and fun runners today (Sunday, September 7) for a testing 13.1-mile run around Wolverhampton city centre and out into Compton and the edges of Tettenhall.
It is one of the highlights of the city sporting calendar, offering a showcase of the city centre to visitors either running in the event or attending to support friends and family.
The 2024 event was marred by confusion over the route, with runners complaining of a lack of direction and some being seen milling back and forth at the junction of Cleveland Street, Victoria Street, Worcester Street and Salop Street near the city centre, unsure of where to go.
Despite this issue, hundreds took part in the events, with the men’s half-marathon won by Omar Ahmed from Birchfield Harriers in a time of 1 hour, 9 minutes and 6 seconds and the women’s half marathon won by Lorna Hulme of Wolverhampton and Bilston Running Club in 1 hour, 30 minutes and 24 seconds.
Alexander Kelly, also from Wolverhampton and Bilston Running Club, came first in the men’s 10k race in 36 minutes, 58 seconds, while Megan Harrold of Halesowen Athletics was the first woman to cross the line with a time of 46 minutes, 44 seconds.

Organisers Wulfrun Racing Limited have produced a full interactive map of the route, as well as a detailed, step-by-step route guide in the event booklet, which helps guide runners along the course.
Wolverhampton half marathon and 10K route
The start and finish will both be on North Street outside the Civic Hall, with the runners starting off with a loop around North Street, Paternoster Row, Red Lion Street and Corporation Street, before turning right along North Street and down Victoria Street, before taking a left turn onto Cleveland Street.
Runners will then follow a route past the Wulfrun Centre and Central Library, take a loop around Broad Street and past the University of Wolverhampton before following Stafford Street onto Ring Road St Peter's.
Taking a left on Waterloo Road, the route will take in the area along Market Square and St John's in the Square, before heading back out of the city centre onto Ring Road St Peter's, heading up and down the ring road via Waterloo Road and past the Central Baths, before taking a right turn past the former Banks's Brewery on Bath Road.

While 10k runners will make a u-turn at this point, half-marathon runners will take a right on Summerfield Road and enter West Park, where they will complete a 90 per cent loop of the park, before exiting at Southgate, running anti-clockwise around the park before performing a u-turn at Upper Vauxhall and turning left at Albert Road.
After heading into Paget Road and making another u-turn outside Wolverhampton College, runners will turn left at the lights down Tettenhall Road, then turn left down Newbridge Crescent and Newbridge Road, going past St Peters College, the Wolves Training Ground and St Edmunds College and right into Compton Road.
The runners will then follow an undulating course into Compton, then up Henwood Road before turning right onto Tettenhall Road, with a slight deviation on Balfour Crescent and a circuit around Saint Jude's Road, Allen Road, Avondale Road and Riches Street, before heading back onto Albert Road.
The route will then take runners back down for a clockwise run around the outskirts of West Park on to Summerfield Road and onto Bath Row (this is also where the 10k runners would have u-turned).

Runners will then turn out of Bath Row onto Ring Road St Peter's, running uphill, then looping onto the downhill section at Stafford Street before turning onto Waterloo Road for a long straight down Waterloo Road and School Street.
The last section will take a run around the edge of Market Square, then an anti-clockwise run around Market Square onto Pitt Street and Worcester Street, with a left onto Salop Street for a run up and down, then a left turn onto Victoria Street for the final run up uphill to the finish on North Street.
