We flew our drone over Wolverhampton's former 'box space' site - this is what we found

It was supposed to be the buzzing heart of Wolverhampton's nightlife, packed with bustling bars and trendy street-food vendors.

But four years after it was first announced, the only life the city's former Bell Place, Box Space site is supporting is wildlife.

The hotly anticipated leisure proposals for the land have long been abandoned, and the site is now being over-run with vegetation as Wolverhampton Council continues its search for a new developer.

Three years after the proposed attraction was announced by the council as the centrepiece of its new vision for a thriving night-time economy, our exclusive aerial pictures show an empty wasteland where the only things springing up are the trees and weeds.

The box space was announced in the summer of 2021 after the Government secured £15.7 million from the Government’s Future High Street Fund.

The following year a planning application was submitted for the site between Bell Street and Cleveland Street, with a target opening date of 2024.

The council demolished a row of shops fronting Cleveland Street and bought the Neville Garratt Centre to make way for the development.
