The south porch to St Peter's Collegiate Church, between Wulfruna Street and Lichfield Street, has been closed since falling masonry was discovered last month.

Deputy church warden Alan Bickley said further investigations had identified structural weaknesses in the porch which would need major repair work.

"Structural engineers found that two decorative pinnacles at the porch entrance had severely deteriorated, and the porch will need to remains closed until they can be removed," he said.

Mr Bickley added that special permission would need to be obtained before work could begin.

"Sadly, the south door will remain closed for the foreseeable future," he said.

Mr Bickley said a temporary ramp had been installed that would allow wheelchair access through the main door, overlooking the Civic Centre.

He added that work was also about to commence removing and repairing the stained glass windows at the rear of the chancel, and that area of the church would be sealed off while the work was carried out.
