Radio station donations to help those most in need
A community radio station is continuing its charity work through deliveries of food donations to people in need.
Gulshan Radio 106.9FM will be making donations of 101 bags of food and essential items throughout Wolverhampton
The bags are being made to mark the 551st birthday of Guru Nanak Dev Ji, the founder of Sikhism, and have been filled with goodies from across the community.
It follows on from the completion of a charity challenge by station chairman Gulshan Dhingra, who completed an 11-hour broadcast on July 11 to raise £1,111.11 for the Midland Air Ambulance Charity.
Mr Dhingra spoke about the bag donations and said the station wanted to continue doing its charity work despite the impact of the coronavirus pandemic on its own funding.
He said: “We have probably lost about 80 per cent of our normal funding because of the pandemic, but we still want to continue to do our charity work and help the community.
“This bag donation follows a series of campaigns we have done this year and we’re always looking to see what we can do to help people.”
Mr Dhingra said there had been a lot of donations from the Asian community in the city, but had also seen a lot of people from different areas and businesses make donations as well.
These included a woman who dropped off 100 bags of pasta and companies such as KFC which have donated ingredients to the fund.
He said he hoped the donations, which will go to food banks such as Ettingshall and Bilston Food Pantry and the Good Shepherd, will help the most vulnerable people in the city.
He said: “We want to ensure that isolated people and people who are suffering can have something to help them that they can cook themselves and have the most basic items.
“We came to this country from India and we have been given so many opportunities, so it seems like the least we can do to help those who need help the most.”
