De-Reece Williams, aged 21 from Wednesfield, has started his own class this week at the Bentley Bridge Leisure Centre, teaching freestyle martial arts, including Taekwondo.

Williams has been doing martial arts for about 16 years. He was seven times the world champion in kickboxing and was also scouted by the GB Olympic Taekwondo team and trained with them a couple of years ago.

He said: “I want the chance to pass on my knowledge to the younger generation and hopefully build up my own team in the future.

“It’s a really fun, interesting and fast paced sport - I really enjoy that aspect.

“It's a good sport to get involved in as well - it brings out good life skills like discipline, composure and concentration.

“It brings out a good level of self-confidence also. Martial arts is not something you’re born knowing how to do - so everyone has the same chance of succeeding and can set their own goals.”

Williams said he has enjoyed teaching the sport in the past, specifically to younger children like those he teaches at Dunstall Hill Primary School.

He added: “I have really enjoyed teaching classes previously and coaching at competitions.

“I am currently looking to start more martial arts classes in primary schools as well - especially as after-school clubs.

“I think it’s good for a lot of little kids because they learn how to better themselves while taking on a new sport - and this all reflects on their learning at school and helps with their education.

“Also, a lot of people want their children to get involved in sport because of all the stuff that is happening with kids at the moment.”

The classes started on March 25 and are open to all ages and abilities, from 4 years of age upwards.

More information can be found on the BTS Wolves Martial Arts Academy Facebook page. The first week is free and after that there is a £5-a-session charge.
