Walsall Council plans remove flags from Brownhills 'Jigger Island' and replace with 'managed display'
A traffic island which has become known for its display of Union Jacks and St George's flags will be instead be given 'a managed display', under plans by council leaders.
Jigger Island in Brownhills - also known as 'Miner Island' - has been festooned with more than 100 flags since September last year, sparking a fierce debate among locals between those in favour of the flag displays, and those against.

Walsall Council has now outlined proposals to remove all the ad hoc flags, and replace them with three 20ft flagpoles displaying the Union Jack, the St George's Cross, and the Black Country flag.
A crescent of 10ft flagpoles and 12 street-lamp banners would frame and enhance the display, it said.
The council said it had recognised the positive intentions behind the displays throughout, while highlighting the need to ensure public safety, maintain the local environment and support community cohesion.
Councillor Adam Hicken, portfolio holder for communities, said the new proposals had been created collaboratively with community representatives and ward councillors.
