In May last year Gurwinder Singh, 36, stabbed the woman so savagely that only her padded bra saved her life.

He burst into her Walsall home and attacked her with a knife he had stolen from a Sikh temple.

Singh, also from Walsall, told her he was going 'to finish her; and stabbed her seven times, leaving her with wounds to her left breast, arm and wrist.

He then raped her and held her against her will before stabbing himself, claiming she had attacked him when police arrived.

Singh was found guilty of charges including attempted murder, rape and threats to kill after a three week trial at Wolverhampton Crown Court six months ago.

Prosecuting Richard Baker said: "He put the knife to her throat and told her he was going to kill her. He had stolen the knife from a Sikh temple. He undressed her and then raped her.”
