Essential road improvement works are taking place to repair potholes and improve access for visitors.

As a result Bloxwich, Ryecroft, James Bridge and Bentley cemeteries will be closed to vehicles only on the days when the work is being carried out by Walsall Council. There will be no funerals on those dates. However, pedestrians can visit graves as normal.

Bloxwich Cemetery, in Field Road, Bloxwich,  will be affected on Monday and Tuesday (Oct 6-7); Ryecroft Cemetery, in Coalpool Lane, Ryecroft, Walsall, from Wednesday-Friday (8-10)October; James Bridge Cemetery, in Cemetery Road, Darlaston, and Bentley Cemetery, in Wolverhampton Rod West, Bentley, on October 13.

However, the four cemeteries will remain open to pedestrians daily from 8am-5pm. Visitors must to follow any instructions from the works' team while the improvements are carried out.

There will be no disruption to funeral services, as no burials or interments are scheduled on the affected dates. The works are confined to the internal cemetery roads, and external roads will not be affected.

Councillor Gary Flint, portfolio holder for Culture, Health and Wellbeing, said, “We know how important our cemeteries are to residents, and these works are about making sure they remain safe and accessible.

“Over time, some of the internal roads have deteriorated, these improvements will provide smoother and safer routes for both vehicles and pedestrians, ensuring a better experience for everyone who visits.”

Last month the council's Bereavement Service won the Team of the Year at the Association for Public Service Excellence awards held in Glasgow in the Cemetery and Crematorium Service category.
