Help requested to stop flooding at elderly woman's home
The daughter of an elderly woman has asked for more help from the housing group in charge of her home to keep it safe from flooding.
Carol Havishan has called on Walsall Housing Group (whg) to do more to help her 82-year-old mother Theresa due to her flat being at risk of flooding during heavy rainfall.
Miss Havishan said her mother's flat was badly flooded, along with other flats and the communal area, at Shire View Gardens in Pelsall two years ago, and she claims it has come close to flooding again.
She said: "When it flooded two years ago, it took whg six days to come out and have a look, for which they replastered the walls and put down some vinyl flooring as a gesture of goodwill.
"It's come close a few times, with water running down the passageway towards the communal area through the front door, although we've managed to stop it by putting sandbags down."
Miss Havishan said her health, including a heart condition, meant she couldn't keep moving sandbags and said her mother's neighbours were not in the best health, so would struggle to continue doing the work.
She said: "It's really causing me anxiety and leaving me upset and frustrated as my mum is on an oxygen machine 15 hours a day, which would get damaged if the water gets to it.
Concerns
"All I want them to do is put something in place to stop the water coming down into the communal area as we can't keep bringing sandbags down.
"I'd like them to look at the drains in the street and put some kind of floodgate across the doors or even some kind of ramp to cause the flood water to flow the opposite way."
Stephen Walters, home maintenance project manager at whg, said: “The flooding was as a result of the extreme weather conditions being experienced at the moment.
"We will do all we can to support Walsall Council and Severn Trent in their endeavours to put in place measures that may alleviate flooding from a similar deluge.
"We understand our customer’s concerns and have carried out the necessary repair work to homes affected by flood damage to ensure our customers can continue to enjoy living in their homes."
