The announcement follows the recent speech in Dudley by the Prime Minster which highlighted the need for investment in infrastructure to help revive the economy.

The grant money comes from The Town Fund which was established to support the government’s ambition to create jobs and build stronger and more resilient local economies and communities. The two areas were named as among 100 in the UK to share in the £3.6 billion fund.

Speaking about the announcement, deputy leader of Walsall Council, Councillor Adrian Andrew said: “This is a welcome announcement and will allow us to accelerate the work we have been planning.

More Covid-19 coverage:

"It is great that the government are supporting our towns and this support could not have come at a better time following the Covid 19 situation.

"Our local centres remain vibrant but reflect the economic difficulties of the last few years. I’m confident the improvements we can now make will make a huge difference and bring a sense of confidence for the future.”

Projects within Government guideline include improvement to or new parks and green spaces and sustainable transport links, improvements to town centres including repurposing empty commercial properties and demolition or site remediation where this will have an immediate benefit.

The council will now make a submission to the government and the grants should be available by August once the plans have been considered in the light of government guidance.
