In less than a week a petition against the scheme, which could be built at Bescot railway sidings in Friar Park, has topped 1,200 signatures.

Network Rail say the facility will create 100 jobs and produce 600,000 concrete sleepers a year.

More than 700 people had signed the change.org petition on Wednesday when Network Rail held a meeting to discuss the scheme.

That number has now increased by 400 while a paper petition is also doing the rounds.

The intention is to hand the petitions in to Sandwell Council which will have to decide on any formal planning application expected to be submitted by Network Rail.
