Review of Stafford A-road will include 'dangerous' crossroads
A review is set to be carried out on a busy route into Stafford that includes a “dangerous” crossroads, a senior county councillor has revealed.
The review will include the speed limit and junction improvements at Brocton Crossroads, the site of a fatal collision in 2010.
Fifty-five-year-old motorcyclist Geoffrey Jones died on May 5 that year after his red Suzuki motorbike was in collision with a blue Volkswagen Golf at the crossroads at Brocton, southeast of Stafford.

Stafford councillor Ann Edgeller highlighted road safety concerns at Brocton Crossroads during the latest full Staffordshire County Council meeting. The authority’s cabinet has since approved its Combined Highways and Transport Capital Delivery Programme for 2026/27, which sets out investments in the road network over the coming year.
Councillor Edgeller asked: “With the announcement of a further £15 million of investment in highways for improvements by the county council following on from the £45m invested by the previous administration, can I ask that Brocton Crossroads on the A34 from Stafford to Cannock is taken into consideration for improvement? Four roads coming together at the junction is dangerous.
“This was demonstrated by a fatal accident and with numerous accidents happening on a regular basis ever since. It is only good luck that has meant there have not been further fatal incidents and with the increasing traffic levels bringing with them increased risk.
“Will the cabinet support member meet with me on site to look at what improvements can be made and agree a plan for getting those improvements into the council’s capital programme? Would he also look at Baswich Lane and the bends on Baswich Lane? I think the chairman [Stafford Central’s Councillor Paul Williams] would agree with me it’s a very dangerous situation.”
Councillor Peter Mason, cabinet member for strategic highways, responded: “Of course I will ensure the cabinet support member meets with you and looks at those situations.
“£10,000 is allocated in the annual Highways and Transport Capital Programme to carry out a review of the A34 route between Wildwood and Brocton, including suitability of the speed limit and junction improvements at Brocton Crossroads. This review will identify measures to help mitigate against longstanding local community concerns regarding traffic volume and safety when navigating the junction, including risk taking and poor manoeuvres.
“In the last three years of complete data, there have been three road traffic collisions, including two involving serious injury, as well as numerous cases of anecdotal evidence of damage-only collisions at Brocton Crossroads. Brocton Parish Council have previously submitted a petition with 4,187 signatures to consider road safety improvements at Brocton Crossroads.”
