It happened on the northbound carriageway of the A34 at Yarlet, between Stafford and Stone.

WMAS said one of its off-duty paramedics "came across the incident and stopped to provide aid to the pedestrian".

A land ambulance and a Midlands Air Ambulance helicopter with a doctor and critical care paramedic on board also attended.

A WMAS spokesperson said: “The pedestrian, a man, had sustained serious injuries in the collision and was quickly given trauma care by the team of medics.

"Once the man’s condition was stabilised, he was conveyed on blue lights by land ambulance to Royal Stoke University Hospital. The aircrew medics travelled in the ambulance to continue advanced trauma care enroute to A&E.”
