Fire service update on spill incident which led to closure of Lichfield Leisure Centre

A fire service has provided an update on a "minor gas spill" which led to the closure of a new leisure centre.

Firefighters were called to Lichfield Leisure Centre off Curborough Road at about 7.15am yesterday (February 15) and the centre was closed for about 90 minutes.

The fire crew ventilated the building and left the scene by 9am.

A statement from the Staffordshire Fire and Rescue Service said: "We were called at 7.15am yesterday to a leisure centre on Curborough Road, Lichfield, following reports of a minor gas spill.

"One crew attended the scene and used gas monitoring equipment to ventilate the building. No one was injured and crews left the scene at 9am."

The centre was opened last month by Olympian swimmer Rebecca Adlington, with Lichfield District Council boasting "state-of-the-art sport and fitness facilities, including a 25-metre swimming pool, indoor cycling studio, fully equipped gym, community room, 3G football pitches, a diverse programme of fitness classes, and an outdoor play area".
