A Ministry of Justice (MoJ) spokesperson said that water supply to HMP Swinfen Hall, near Lichfield, has been "reinstated" after a leak led to a water outage on Friday (August 8).

The mother of a former prisoner said that water supply to the facilities of the prison had been affected, leaving inmates unable to take showers "for several days".

Now, a spokesperson for the MoJ has said that water has been reinstated to the prison since the leak on August 8, adding that "at no time" was the running water supply to cells compromised.

The spokesperson said: "The situation is resolved and the water supply to HMP Swinfen Hall has been reinstated.

"Prionsers had access to clean drinking water at all times."

One woman, whose son was previously an inmate at the prison, said that prisoners had been given 500ml bottles of water to use, however, "were not able to take showers".

The MoJ spokesperson added that showers in the facility were stopped as a 'precautionary measure' as to not draw any more water from the supply, and to 'prevent cells running dry.'
