The improvements have been carried out in at the junction of Girton Road and Devon Road, in Cannock, under the A FAIR (Flood: Aware, Informed, Resilient) Approach to Community Flood Risk’ scheme and has seen the installation of anti-flooding air bricks, deflective railings and floodgates by Staffordshire County Council.

This followed flash flooding in the district in autumn 2025.

Council crews worked closely with householders, businesses and councillors on the scheme, which included drainage improvements to reduce flood risks to residents on Girton Road and Devon Road. Gullies and blocked drains at the junctions have been cleared to allow water to drain better from the area.

Other flood alleviation works, including the installation of anti-flood airbricks and deflective railings, were completed on a nearby multiple occupancy building to further reduce the impact of flooding on residents. The final part of the scheme will also see the installation of bespoke floodgates for at risk properties.

Residents were kept informed throughout the works, given advice on protecting their properties from flooding and encouraged to share their local flood knowledge and valuable insights to improve the scheme.

Daniel Cecil, Cabinet Support Member for Highways South at Staffordshire County Council, said: “It’s great to see the completion of these works which have addressed a long-standing flooding issue in the area.

“By working closely with our partners, local businesses and residents, we were able to develop and deliver an innovative solution that would prevent future flooding. It’s also wonderful to learn that residents are pleased with the outcome.

“I’d like to thank people for their input to the project, and their patience and co-operation while we completed these important works.”

Surface water in the area will continue to be monitored and crews will be returning to undertake further remediation works throughout Spring.

FAIR is one of 25 projects that make up the national Flood and Coastal Resilience Innovation Programme (FCRIP), funded by the Department for Environment Food and Rural Affairs and managed by the Environment Agency.

In Cannock, motorists were taking care as flood water rose in Devon Road off Lichfield Road in September 2025.
