An injured horse was led to safety on the M6 by fire crews after a horsebox overturned on the motorway

Staffordshire Fire and Rescue Service were called to the M6 toll south at 5.20pm on Sunday, September 14 following reports of a horse being trapped in an overturned vehicle. Staffordshire Police and Highways also attended the scene.

Two crews and a further specialist animal rescue crew attended the scene where a horsebox was found on its side with the horse inside.

A vet sedated the horse and the carriageway was closed to prevent noise disruption to the horse while crews worked to remove it from the horsebox.

The horse was successfully removed from the horsebox just after 10pm and was treated by a vet before being taken to a specialist hospital.

Fire crews left the scene at 10.30pm, and the road was reopened shortly after.
