'Sort out this flooding problem caused by blocked ditches and gullies' say Staffordshire residents

Staffordshire residents are calling for more efforts to clear gullies and improve drainage to alleviate flooding which results in road and property damage.

But the county council is insisting that the road drainage system is well-maintained and there is funding in the kitty to clear more than 165,000 gullies which it is responsible for.

Kaye Le Page, owner of Springslade Lodge tearoom based in Camp Road near Broadhurst Green near Cannock, says the cafe suffered flooding during recent torrential downpours and says she is fed up with dealing with water and road damage issues due to nearby gullies being blocked up.

"The gullies are full of mud and stones. When it rains the water just runs along the roads, Staffordshire does not clear gullies. We're on the forest edge at Cannock Chase and on Thursday our cafe was flooded.

"There are also issues with ruts and crevasses in the access road which the council used to send a machine to level it off, but they have stopped doing that. We're worried that vehicles might get damaged," Mrs Le Page said.

She explained that due to the issues a recent wedding party was advised to make their way into the site on foot and adds that the council should do more to help residents and businesses forced to deal with ongoing problems with overflowing drains.
