Staffordshire Police have issued a warning to students to prevent university accommodations from being burgled.

The force released seven safety tips ahead of students returning for the autumn semester as 'offending often increases' around September.

Staffordshire Police said: "We’re advising students across Staffordshire to make sure they take the necessary steps to limit the chances of being targeted by thieves as the new term starts.

"Unfortunately, we know that burglars are opportunists, and offending often increases when students start back at university or school in September.

"Criminals know you’ll be out of your accommodation for long periods of time while sitting in classes, which means that you’re more likely to be targeted at this time of year.

"We’re working proactively across Staffordshire to gather intelligence and to act robustly against thieves, but there’s also steps you can take to help us avoid burglaries from happening in the first place."

Tips to keep your student accommodation safe

  1. Lock your doors and windows every time you leave your accommodation

  2. Don’t prop open communal doors in halls or flats

  3. Keep your valuables out of sight and locked away in secured storage boxes where possible

  4. Be mindful of what you’re posting online. If you’re not on a private account, you could be advertising to a burglar that you’re out of the house and you won’t be back for a long time

  5. Report suspicious activity to your landlord, security or us if needed – and make sure everyone else you live with does the same

  6. If you’re heading for a drink, especially in the early hours, make sure you keep your phone, keys and any valuables on your person secure

  7. Don’t leave your bags or valuables unattended

Victims of robberies are advised to contact police on 101 or using the Live Chat on the website.
