Watch: Minister challenged to visit West Bromwich and try a Firkins iced-lemon bun during Commons debate
A government minister has been challenged to visit the Black Country to sample one of Firkins' famous iced lemon buns during a debate in the Commons.
Sarah Coombes, MP for West Bromwich, told Sir Chris Bryant, minister for creative arts, industry and tourism how the town had been gripped by the relaunch of the historic bakery.
"We saw people queuing from 7am for the famous lemon iced-buns that Firkins had (made), for many, many years," she said.
"Would the minister agree that food and hospitality are at the heart of our high streets? Would you like to come and taste one of those iced buns?"
Sir Chris replied: "I'm really more of a Chelsea bun person than an iced bun. But she makes a very good point that there are businesses up and down the country who are opening anew, and opening afresh, and actually, far from dismissing the opportunity of having a National Health Service that works more effectively,, that has a rail service that works effectively, and has a secure set of working rights for people.
"They welcome that, and want people to have a proper wage when they are in work, because they know that motivates their staff better."
