Commuters facing diversion as road remains shut after major blaze near West Bromwich

Bus passengers and drivers are facing disruption as a road remains closed after a major blaze at a tyre business in Great Bridge.

More than 100 firefighters tackled the fire at an industrial unit in Great Bridge Street, Great Bridge, yesterday (July 27).

The facility was evacuated and no casualties were reported, the West Midlands Fire Service said. A spokesperson later said it involved approximately 20 tonnes of tyres.

"Several" homes on nearby Elwell Street were evacuated "as a precaution", they said. An update at 10pm said: "Local residents who were evacuated are expected to be able to return to their homes shortly."

West Midlands Roads posted on X today: "Great Bridge Street, Great Bridge, West Bromwich. Following the fire yesterday, the road remains closed both ways." 

The West Midlands Fire Service said in an update this morning: "We have remained at the scene overnight. Currently, five fire engines from Sheldon, Billesley, Fallings Park, Tipton and Handsworth are in attendance.

"A crew from Oldbury are manning the hydraulic aerial platform, and have been supporting firefighters who have been extinguishing hotspots.

"Police colleagues continue to manage cordons and access to nearby buildings."
