West Bromwich martial arts club receives council grant
A Black Country karate club has been awarded a £1,700 grant through a special council fund.
Moose Martial Arts, in West Bromwich, teaches people self-defence skills and trains athletes for major championships.
The club, which is run on a voluntary basis in Woodward Street, has 40 students ranging from the age of 40 to 60-years-old. Sessions include self-defence, kata sparring and pad work – and the club also helps with preparations for members to enter the European and World championships.
The £1,739 grant from Sandwell Council will help provide more equipment to enable trainers to help more members improve their skills and hopefully be selected to represent England.
Councillor Shirley Hosell, town chair for West Bromwich, said: "I am very pleased to hear that the money has helped the club to adopt new teaching methods.
“It is also good to hear that the grant has helped to encourage new students to attend sessions.”
Shannon Parsons, from Moose Martial Arts, added: "The club has received the money and it is helping us deliver different teaching methods which really benefit the young people who attend.
"It’s helped to encourage new students to attend and increased overall numbers. We also have a student who has represented England at the All Nations Championships in August and will be at the Europeans in Ireland in November."
