Fire crews rush to blaze in Wednesbury as fire engulfs garden fence sending 'grey and black smoke' billowing into sky

Fire crews raced to a house in Wednesbury today (March 25) due to a blaze which sent grey and black smoke billowing into the sky.

Black smoke was seen billowing from a property in Friar Park Road in Wednesbury this afternoon.

A fire engine from Wednesbury station and a 4x4 brigade response vehicle from West Bromwich raced to the scene shortly before 12.45pm.

Firefighters arrived to find a fence on fire in the rear garden of a property on the road.

The fire caused minor heat damage to a nearby drainage pipe.

West Midlands Fire Service said it was believed that the blaze was started accidentally.

Macy Burgess, 18, was waiting for the number 40 bus outside Lidl on Friar Park Road when she saw the smoke billowing into the sky.

She told the Express & Star: "As I was waiting for the bus I noticed grey and black smoke coming from a house on Friar Park Road. 

"I spoke to someone else and they also said it looked like a fire. 

"I was hesitant to call 999 as I was waiting for the bus to get to college and I had already heard sirens arriving too. 

"Shortly after, the fire engine arrived and rushed to put the fire out."

West Midlands Fire Service said: "Shortly before 12.45pm on Wednesday we responded to Friar Park Road, Wednesbury.

"A fire engine from Wednesbury and a 4x4 brigade response vehicle from West Bromwich attended, arriving to find a fence on fire in a rear garden.

"Firefighters extinguished the fire, which caused minor heat damage to a nearby drainage pipe. It's believed the fire started accidentally."
