Boy, 4, was struck by bus in Tipton on dimly lit road, inquest hears
A four-year-old boy who was struck by a bus in Tipton in a dark street died as a result of head and chest injuries, an inquest has heard.
Gurkirat Singh, from the town, was on his way from a shopping trip with his mother and siblings when he crossed the road from between parked cars into the path of the 226 in Tipton High Street shortly before 5pm on December 6 last year.
Giving evidence at the hearing held in Oldbury on Wednesday(12) bus driver Ahebee Nicaise said in the darkness he did not see the child crossing from the righthand side of the street. He explained that moments before the collision he pulled up at the bus stop and one passenger alighted. He said he checked the mirrors and indicated to pull out before pulling out.
Mr Nicaise said: "The first thing I saw was a flash in front of me. The the bus jolted and that's when I realised something was wrong. It happened fast. I didn't see anyone.
"I braked hard, but it was too late."
"Everybody was shouting and when I got out of the bus I saw the child under it," he said.
